A strategic approach to hypothesis formulation transforms your A/B testing into a powerful tool for continuous improvement and impactful decision-making. In this guide we explore why you need to write a test hypothesis, how to write one and share three common mistake to avoid.
Why do I even need a hypothesis?
We often find that hypothesis writing isn’t taken seriously enough. We’ve been taught we need to do it, so a few sentences are quickly scribbled down without much thought. If you recognise yourself, it’s time to stop this practice and spend more time crafting a proper hypothesis.
The formulation and testing of hypotheses is integral to the scientific method. Two tenets are crucial to a hypothesis:
- Falsifiability - the capacity for some proposition, statement, theory, or hypothesis to be proven wrong. This concept was introduced in 1935 by Austrian philosopher and scientist Karl Popper.
- Testability - a hypothesis is testable if there is a possibility of deciding whether it is true or false based on experimentation by anyone.
Let’s keep these in mind and look at how to craft a testable hypothesis.
