The initial crucial step in developing a digital strategy for your charity involves assessing your maturity level. Our exclusive Digital Marketing Maturity Assessment tool  has been designed to help you measure your digital maturity across seven focus areas.

By understanding your current standing, you can pinpoint areas that require attention and focus to enhance your digital capabilities. Our tool differs from most, in that it ties your maturity directly to a series of defined behaviours, practices and processes.

"The Digital Marketing Maturity Assessment tool was really easy and quick to use, and provided valuable insights for us an organisation. With the questions grouped into clear themes, it really helped us to understand where we needed to focus and what we needed to prioritise in what can often be an overwhelming digital landscape. It also gave us some reassurances that we were in a better position than we realised and made the task of developing our digital strategy less daunting."

Head of Marketing and Brand, NHS Charities Together

How the Digital Maturity Assessment Tool works

It uses a series of questions that are designed to measure your level of digital capability and maturity across seven key dimensions:

  • Strategy
  • People
  • Channels
  • Customers
  • Measurement
  • Data
  • Tools

For each dimension there are multiple-choice questions for you to select:

  • Yes
  • No
  • Somewhat
  • Don’t know
  • Not applicable

Each response is assigned a score based on your selection, and these scores automatically aggregate to provide dimension-specific and overall assessments.

To help turn these scores into something more tangible, we use specific competency levels:

  • Beginning
  • Building
  • Accomplishing
  • Maturing
  • Leading

How to use the tool

Despite the numerous questions, the assessment process is swift, employing multiple-choice questions. We suggest allocating 30-45 minutes to ensure ample focus during completion.t.

For enhanced effectiveness, consider involving colleagues in the assessment process, particularly if there are questions for which you may lack answers but anticipate that your colleagues possess the relevant information. Collaboration can provide a more comprehensive and accurate evaluation.

Here’s the steps to take:

  1. Download the file and save it
  2. Open it up and familiarise yourself with the instructions
  3.  Starting on the ‘Strategy‘ tab answer each of the questions in turn, choosing an answer from the ‘Answers‘ column
  4. Once you’ve answered all of the questions in that tab, move onto the next and so on until you have answered all 7 areas
  5.  Click on the ‘Digital Maturity Radar‘ tab where you can then view your overall score and capability level, plus your score for each dimension

What to do next

After completing the assessment, you can analyse each section to identify areas for improvement in terms of your digital capability. This allows for a targeted approach to enhancing your overall digital maturity.

Typically, the focus is on the dimensions where you scored the lowest, but it’s also worth noting that there might be opportunities for improvement within higher-scoring dimensions that you are aware of and can address.

Review the questions where your responses were ‘no’ or ‘somewhat,’ and brainstorm actionable steps to enable you to answer ‘yes’ in the future. This targeted approach allows you to proactively address specific areas for improvement in your digital capability.

If there are questions you couldn’t answer (‘don’t know’), consider involving others who might have the answers in the future. It may be beneficial to seek support from outside your organisation for training or expertise to ensure a more comprehensive understanding in subsequent assessments.

We recommend saving your results and periodically revisiting the assessment on a regular basis, whether quarterly or annually. This is particularly important if you have implemented changes or initiatives aimed at improving your digital capabilities, allowing you to track and measure progress over time.
